Let’s be honest, no one enjoys or even looks forward to going to the dentist. For many people, anxiety is the biggest factor that arises when even the thought of going in for an appointment. One common dentistry practice that has become increasingly more popular over the last 10 years or so has been the use of sedation. Whether you get nervous, suffer from severe anxiety or are sensitive to pain, sedation dentistry helps relax and dull any associated pain with routine dental exams.
At Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry, we provide a full range of sedation methods that will be sure to suit your needs when you come for your exam. Keeping your mouth healthy has a wide range of health benefits so it is important to see your dentist on a consistent basis. Sedation methods range from nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) to general dental anesthesia. Depending on the level of anxiety or sensitivity to pain, our dentists will be able to provide the right method to make your exam as relaxing and pain-free as possible.
Types of Dental Sedation
Nitrous Oxide– typically, the most common form of sedation is laughing gas. The effects of nitrous oxide allow the patient to relax, reduces anxiety and dulls the pain of the dental procedure. This form does not put you to sleep and can be used in conjunction with local injections of anesthesia.
Oral Sedation– either taken in a pill or liquid form, oral sedation allows the patient to remain conscious as well but provides a stronger sedation effect than nitrous oxide alone. When used with nitrous oxide, it’s not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during the procedures.
IV Sedation– for patients that suffer from severe anxiety, IV sedation can be recommended by the dentist to provide as much comfort and relaxation as possible for the patient while remaining conscious. This method often leaves patients with no recollection of the procedure at all and requires the patient to be driven home due to the lingering effects.
